during my recent holiday trip to Baa Atoll Thulhaadhoo, i met an old man on the road who stopped by to talk to me, as i seemed to be a visitor on the island. he enquired me about my background, where i belong to and why i was there etc etc ..
after talking for sometime he asked me my name.. i replied, "jaaheen"! suddenly he raised his eyebrows and made an "err err" face at me! he said, "what a name! why werent you named one of those nice names like Mohamed, Usman or Ibrahim? they are very nice names for boys! your name sounds very modern and i dont like that!"... he sounded quite unhappy about my name and asked me to change it... hehe.. i just stood there listening to whatever he was saying at me, and just smiled at him.. :)
that night i was thinking abt what he said.. and even by giving it a second thought i cudnt find anything wrong with my name as it fulfills the purpose.. the purpose which is to identify one and help to communicate with that person..
looking at the facts.. as far as i have known, my name is of Persian origin, with "tiger" as its meaning. It is a Muslim name and thats all what matters, so i dont mind abt it much. anyways I've been told that it was a Maldivian sheikh who named me, so thats a bit of relief too.. :p
but still.. whats with my name? several ppl have commented on my name so far.. what do you think about it?

Heh. I find it very primitive. Nothing weird about it and it quite fits our society, religion and time.
As for your name, at first it struck me as odd because I've a friend named "Zaheen"- which I'm used to.
simon:
mine is pronounced differently.. its actually jaaheen :) i just write it with a single 'a' :p
inash: primitive? LOL!
IT: sulaiman or usman? almost the same as what the old guy told me... hehe :)
Your name "Jaheen" is Persian and it means LION not TIGER ;)
if it means Tiger, then I dont see any reason to dislike it.
tiger sounds cool.

So relax..you are fine, your criteria for a name has been fulfilled. What matters to you is that your name is a Muslim name and the sheik-in-whom-you-trust has given you the name.
Tell you the truth, Sheiks give me the shakes and I dont care to be a copycat arab or Persian and so although I have been given an arabic name, I prefer to be called by my Maldivian name - Tuththu Manike.
Jaheen or Jai hind, your name is your identity. Mark my word, don't change it. Its fine
man u gotta change ur name soon!! tiger is a name of beer. no wonder the old man asked u to change ur name. U Tiger Beer!! LOL

my last name is Shaheen, quite common across the middle east. however, during to a recent visit to my home country, egypt, I was going through old family documents and found that before the 1920's they were writing family name as "Jaheen" (with arabic Jeem, not sheen). I also found that the old tomb across the one currently used has name Jaheen written on it. it looks like my original family name is Jaheen and that Shaheen is a recent modification. Like you, I am intrigued to find out its origins.
